At this moment, US is systematically destroying its own economy. Look at the data. US is barely preventing itself from going into negative GDP thanks to AI bubble. 

Consumer spending is way down. The top 10% account for 50% of consumer spending. And the top 1% outspend the 99% cumulative essentials and luxury expenditure. All of this money is chasing speculative waves, most currently Gen AI. 

Unfortunately for India, their exports are rarely oriented towards serving the ultra rich apart from jewellery and high value textile. 

Generic pharma could serve Americans very well given the cuts to healthcare services, but Trump wants to please American pharma companies. 

If this chaos continues (and it looks like it will), Indian companies will be forced to diversify anyway. Tariffs are only speeding up the inevitable.

The year-on-year percentage sounds high, but in the larger picture, it doesn't mean much. 

Total US trade with Russia including both imports and exports of both goods and services was only [$5.4 billion](https://ustr.gov/countries-regions/europe-middle-east/russia-and-eurasia/russia) in 2024. At +20%, assuming Putin's figure is accurate, that puts the current rate on track to be about $6.5 billion, which is still vastly lower than pre-war numbers ($34 billion in 2013).  By contrast, India imported $36 billion in oil alone last year, not even including gas.  Total trade in 2024 was $65 billion, vastly *increased* from $10 billion in 2013.  So total US trade with Russia is still a fraction of what it used to be, a fraction of India-Russia trade, and limited to just a few sectors, the largest of which is fertilizer (necessary for global food security, no alternative supply, $1.3 billion).  Meanwhile India-Russia trade has exploded and is focused on oil, which Russia is far from the only source of. 

But also bear in mind, that Putin likely had an Indian audience in mind when he mentioned this.  He wanted headlines just like this one.

I would broadly agree with the OP except that Trump has caused a rift with almost everyone. He as antagonised the closest US allies. He has got BRICS to be more relevant and serious discuss reducing their reliance on the dollar and Europe to start thinking of being more independent of the US. This will get India to explore more areas of cooperation with both China and Russia.
